Mauricio Pochettino likes working with young players but Tottenham Hotspur need proven quality.
Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer policy since Mauricio Pochettino became manager has been very clear – sign young players for cheaper fees and develop them into top-class talents.
It has worked wonderfully in some cases, as with Dele Alli and Eric Dier, while Pochettino has also worked wonders with players he inherited, such as Harry Kane, Harry Winks and Danny Rose.
However, Tottenham’s relative struggles in the Premier League this season has shown them to be short on proven depth and quality compared to their rivals, particularly in attacking areas.
The January transfer window is approaching and, while Spurs are traditionally quiet at this time of year, the players they are being linked with continue to be prospects who will need nurturing.
According to The Mirror, 17-year-olf Fulham prodigy Ryan Sessegnon is a target, and The Telegraph understands that Spurs will go back in for Everton’s Ross Barkley, but he has plenty to learn too.
Pochettino has rarely recruited players who are at their peak, but the two times he has – with Toby Alderweireld and Victor Wanyama – Spurs have reaped the rewards without splashing big cash.
Facing a battle to get into the top four, which is crucial to keeping their biggest stars, Spurs should be looking at buying players who can have an immediate impact, if they are active next month.
Tottenham have gambled and failed too often recently, on the likes of Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, Clinton N’Jie and Vincent Janssen, and need their next attacking signing to be the finished article.
