Ben Davies started at left-back as Tottenham Hotspur limped into the EFL Cup fourth round after beating Watford on penalties.

The fact that Danny Rose lost his place as Tottenham Hotspur’s number one left-back last season is a credit to Ben Davies.
The Welsh international arrived from Swansea City in 2014 and spent his first three years at North London as back-up to Rose. But he cemented his place in Spurs’ starting XI for the first time at the start of 2017/18 and never looked back, becoming a key player as Mauricio Pochettino’s side qualified for the Champions League.
That form has deserted Davies in the opening weeks of the current campaign. He was below par in eye-catching defeats against Watford and Inter Milan recently and, to make matters worse, Rose produced a hugely impressive performance after replacing him for Saturday’s win at Brighton, setting up Erik Lamela’s match-winning goal.

Davies’ hopes of forcing his way back into Pochettino’s starting XI have not been helped by another underwhelming display on Wednesday.
Tottenham limped into the fourth round of the EFL Cup after a penalty shoot-out victory against Watford, but the error-prone Davies once again looked like a shadow of the solid defender who impressed so many last season.
And it seems that some Tottenham fans are losing patience.
