Mauricio Pochettino has paid tribute to another battling Newcastle United performance as his Tottenham Hotspur team was made to sweat for their 1-0 win at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The Magpies have performed impressively against the so-called ‘big boys’ this season, beating Manchester City in midweek despite conceding a first minute goal to their bleached-blonde bogeyman Sergio Aguero.

And Newcastle were typically well-drilled as Spurs made the trip to Tyneside at the weekend. Only a speculative Heung Min-Son effort, which squirmed through the arms of the usually reliable Martin Dubravka, denied Rafa Benitez’s side a hard-earned point.

In quotes reported by The Chronicle after the game, Pochettino has admitted that Newcastle made life very difficult for his Spurs side.

“Newcastle were very organised, playing so deep and not giving us too much space, but the positional game was good,” said the former Southampton boss, who claims his side were fully deserving of the win.

“We created some chances in the first half, but in the moment you don’t score and break this type of game, always it is going to be difficult in the second half because their belief increases.”

Only Leicester have conceded fewer goals in the bottom half of the Premier League than Newcastle (33) this season.

And, who knows, the new record signing Miguel Almiron could prove to be the much-needed spark at the other end of the pitch that Newcastle need to turn narrow defeats into draws or even wins.
