Are Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of bringing Frenkie De Jong to the Premier League over as La Liga giants Real Madrid plot mammoth offer

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing Frenkie De Jong next year might just have been killed off by a Spanish giant – but it’s not the Dutchman’s long-time admirers Barcelona.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Spurs were set to go head-to-head with Barca for the 21-year-old Ajax midfielder in 2019. It is reported that Mauricio Pochettino is a huge fan of De Jong and Spurs saw a £45 million bid rejected in the summer.
But it seems that Real Madrid are now set to take the pursuit of De Jong to a whole new level.
According to De Telegraaf, Real Madrid think that the Dutch international can replace Luka Modric at the Bernabau. And the report adds that the current Champions of Europe are willing to offer £70 million for De Jong – a whole £25 million more than Tottenham were willing to pay.

With Tottenham devoting so much of their funds into building their new stadium, money for new signings has been tight of late with the North London club failing to bring in a single player throughout the summer transfer window.
So it seems unlikely that they would be capable of rivalling Real Madrid for De Jong if the bidding is set to start at £70 million.
