Liverpool have been heavily linked with Marco Asensio; one of the key players of La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Liverpool will have to shatter the British transfer record if they want to sign Real Madrid superstar Marco Asensio, with the Spaniard’s agent confirming to ESPN that Los Blancos have rejected a bid of £155 million.

The Premier League title chasers have shown a willingness to break the bank for their top targets in recent times, making Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker the most expensive defender and goalkeeper in football history during 2018.

But any potential deal for Asensio would comfortably surpass the £100 million barrier, perhaps exceeding the fee Liverpool sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for 14 months ago.

The Anfield giants have long been linked with the former Espanyol youngster, with Sport claiming they would demand him in exchange if Real try to lure Sadio Mane away from Merseyside.

But if Klopp’s side want to buy Asensio outright, they’ll have to dig very, very deep.

“Over the last year there have been offers as high as £130m and £155m, but Madrid did not want to listen to them,” his agent, Horacio Gaggioli, told ESPN.

“There is always interest in Marco from other big clubs, seeing if he wanted to leave, which is normal for the player he is.”

Asensio was in glorious form as Real won the Champions League for a third straight season in 2017/18 but his form has dipped rather substantially since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, struggling to take up the mantle as the club’s main man.

He has scored just six goals while producing seven assists in 41 games.
