Rangers are a point and a place above Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table, but the January transfer window is just weeks away.
For the first time in seven years, Rangers are top of the Scottish Premiership table.
Goals from Connor Goldson and a 17th of the season from Alfredo Morelos sealed a dramatic 2-1 win at Hearts on Sunday, meaning The Gers are now a point clear of Old Firm rivals and reigning champions Celtic in top spot – although Brendan Rodgers’ side have a game in hand.
But with the January transfer window just around the corner, Celtic have the chance to respond and it seems that The Hoops are planning to reinforce their squad in the New Year.
The Mail claims that Celtic want to strengthen their defence by signing Aberdeen’s Scotland international Scott McKenna while the same publication believes that the Glasgow giants are also keen to bring in a new striker to replace Moussa Dembele.
And, speaking to the Evening Times, former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has called upon his old employers to match Celtic’s ambition in the mid-season window to avoid losing their place at the top of the tree.
“I still feel they are a couple of players shy from being a real force and it will be interesting to see what business they do during the January transfer window,” McCulloch said.
“I think Celtic will improve their side and their squad and get stronger so it is imperative that Rangers do likewise if they are to maintain a challenge until the end of the season.”
Celtic appear to have plenty of funds to play with considering that they earned £19.7 million from the sale of Dembele to Lyon at the end of August.
Though Rangers appear to have their own plans in motion with the Daily Record reporting that Steven Gerrard is keen to bring in the exciting Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell on loan.
