Lee Hodson is on loan at St Mirren from Rangers and is set to take on Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

It’s fair to say that Lee Hodson never became a fans’ favourite during his two years at Rangers.

The Northern Irish international featured in just 17 Scottish Premiership games for The Gers with James Tavernier firmly established as the club’s number one right-back. And there were few tears shed when Hodson was loaned out to St Mirren in August.

But the former Watford and MK Dons defender has an excellent opportunity to win over some of his harshest Rangers critics this weekend.

St Mirren welcome Celtic to Paisley on Friday night and the Buddies will need Hodson, not to mention the rest of their backline, to be on top form against Odsonne Edouard, James Forrest, Olivier Ntcham and co.

Hodson arguably produced his finest Rangers performance against Celtic in a 1-1 draw at Parkhead in March 2017. The 26-year-old marked Scott Sinclair, then the Scottish Premiership’s most in-form attacker, out of the game and helped secure an impressive draw against Brendan Rodgers’ runaway champions.

Hodson will need to put in a similar performance in St Mirren colours on Friday. But if he can help inflict more dropped points on a rather unconvincing Celtic side, Hodson will do his reputation at Ibrox no harm at all.
