Michel Vorm struggled in his two Premier League games in Tottenham Hotspur’s starting XI but Paulo Gazzaniga has made a positive impression.

Michel Vorm’s contract at Tottenham Hotspur expires at the end of this season. And it seems that the veteran goalkeeper might have missed his opportunity to secure a prolonged stay in North London.

Vorm has come in for the injured Hugo Lloris in September but looked shaky in defeats against Watford and Liverpool, while also finding himself on the wrong end of a 2-1 loss to Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Spurs have arguably the Premier League’s most impressive defence with Lloris between the sticks, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side look far less secure with the 34-year-old Dutchman behind them. Vorm’s tendency to set nerves jangling with some rather inconsistent handling does not help.

And, with Vorm suffering an injury of his own, it remains to be seen whether he has now played his last game for the club. Because, in his absence, Paulo Gazzaniga has stepped up impressively and suggested that he is a far more secure back-up for Lloris.

The former Southampton stopper impressed in a 2-1 win away at Brighton last week and saved two penalties in Wednesday’s EFL Cup shoot-out victory at home to Watford.

At 26, Gazzaniga is a long-term option, while Vorm appears to be well past his best. As a result, there does not appear to be any reason to keep the former Swansea City and Utrecht number one for another year.
