Tottenham Hotspur legend Clive Allen has implored the North London giants to try and re-sign Luka Modric from Real Madrid this summer, speaking to talkSPORT.

At 33, the Croatian superstar broke the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly last year when he was awarded the prestigious Ballon D’Or award on the back of a sensational 2018 in which he won the Champions League and reached the World Cup final.

But Modric’s future at the Santiago Bernabau beyond this season appears to be in doubt with just over a year remaining on his contract as the La Liga giants prepare an expensive and belated overhaul of an ageing squad.

And Allen believes that Spurs should be looking to welcome back a player they signed from Dinamo Zagreb for £16 million all the way back in 2008 (Independent) while also encouraging Tottenham to offer Gareth Bale a route out of Madrid.

“Even Modric – having worked with both of those players, knowing the characters they are, the type of players they are – I think they would be invaluable signings for the football club,” Allen said.

Modric has lifted 15 trophies with Los Blancos since joining for £33 million (Mirror), including four Champions League crowns, so he’d certainly bring a winning mentality to a Spurs side often referred to as the ‘nearly men’ of English football.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side famously have not won anything since the League Cup 11 years ago.
