It was all the way back in 2012 when Everton were first linked with Cristian Zapata.

According to The Express in July 2012, The Toffees were eyeing Villarreal’s rising star, who had shone in La Liga in his debut season with the Yellow Submarine.

At the age of 25, Zapata appeared to have it all; height, speed and a commanding aerial presence. But instead of joining Everton or West Brom, who were also apparently keen, the Colombian seized the chance to join reigning Serie A champions AC Milan – and who could really blame him.

It is not Zapata’s fault that Milan have failed to win the Scudetto since during an unprecedented trophy drought. But that is not to say the 32-year-old has managed to fulfil his huge potential at the San Siro.

To put it simply, he hasn’t – even if Zapata has been a loyal servant for Milan, making around 150 appearances in seven years.

But with his contract set to expire this summer, Everton have suddenly emerged as a potential destination once again. According to Calciomercato, Marco Silva is battling his former club Watford to sign the now 32-year-old, who will be allowed to leave with Milan keen to focus on younger players instead.

With Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines potentially on their way, Everton could benefit from an experienced old head at the back and Zapata could provide exactly that.
