Wolverhampton Wanderers were heavily tipped to bring Joao Cancelo to the Premier League but he swapped Inter Milan for Juventus instead.
Jorge Mendes has brought some truly outstanding footballers to Wolverhampton Wanderers since 2016. But one player the super-agent could not convince of the Molineux project is Joao Cancelo.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Mendes was pushing the right-back to Wolves this summer after he spent the 2017/18 season at Inter Milan.
But it is reported that Cancelo wanted to join a Champions League club rather than a side who were only promoted to the Premier League in May. And he ended the summer as a Juventus player, with the Serie A champions paying £35 million to bring him to Turin.
And Cancelo has wasted little time in showing Wolves what they’re missing thanks to an outstanding start to life with Juve. After a hugely impressive performance in the 2-0 midweek win against Bologna, manager Max Allegri made some rather bold claims about the former Valencia flyer.
“Cancelo has the qualities to become the best full-back in the world,” Allegri said in quotes reported by AS.
Fortunately for Wolves, however, their current right-back Matt Doherty has taken to the Premier League well, assisting Raul Jimenez’s goal in the recent 1-0 win at home to Burnley.
But for all of Doherty’s qualities, he is unlikely to challenge Cancelo for the title of ‘world’s best full-back’ in the coming months.
