Andre Green is expected to play a prominent role in Aston Villa’s first team in the near future, though not if Tim Sherwood can help it.

Say what you want about Tim Sherwood, one attribute he is not lacking in his confidence.

Despite his ill-advised spell as director of football at Swindon Town going pretty much as everyone expected, with the Robins tumbling into League Two and Sherwood departing with fans wondering what he was even appointed for, it appears that he is not expecting the offers to dry up.

And the one-time Aston Villa boss, who led them to an FA Cup final 12 months before they finished bottom of the Premier League under successor Remi Garde, has pulled no punches when asked if he would target any of his former players at his next club.

Massive future

“If I was to go and get a job, certainly [Andre Green] would be one I’d be coming to take,” the 48-year-old told the Birmingham Mail.

“Andre has got an attitude to die for and he needs to continue that. He’s a man already and he’s got so much in the locker there.

“He can play centre-forward, he can play off the left. Andre Green has got a massive future.”

Sherwood is certainly well placed to pass judgement. Green, who joined the club at the age of nine, was fast-tracked into Villa’s first-team plans during Sherwood’s spell in charge before making his debut under Garde.

And the 18-year-old appears to be edging closer to a place in the starting XI under the reign of Steve Bruce, making 15 appearances in the Championship last season.

And the quick-footed forward is arguably the jewel of Villa’s enviable academy system right now. Meaning Sherwood would have a challenge on his hands attempting to lure Green away from his old employers.
