Tottenham Hotspur have come a long way since Tim Sherwood’s spell in the dugout during the second half of the 2013/14 season.

Spurs are Champions League regulars these days and ensured that they will be playing in the knockout stages of Europe’s premiere club competition in the New Year after a crucial 1-1 draw away at Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Thanks to Inter Milan’s inability to beat PSV Eindhoven at the San Siro, Lucas Moura’s late goal was enough at the Camp Nou and, in truth, Tottenham were more than deserving of their result.

Speaking on talkSPORT (12 December, 8.30am), Sherwood has lauded the performance of his former employers against arguably Europe’s best team, and has paid tribute in particular to resurgent left-back Danny Rose.

“They never panicked. I didn’t think it was going to drop their way but Mauricio (Pochettino) changed it up, made the right change and Lucas was in the right place at the right time,” Sherwood said.

“Danny Rose looked great last night, he looks like he’s coming back to full fitness.”

“(Heung Min) Son, (Dele) Alli, (Christian) Eriksen; they could have been wearing a Barcelona shirt. They’ve shown they’re capable of playing for the top clubs.”

Making his first Champions League start of the season in the place of Ben Davies, Rose produced arguably his best performance in a Tottenham shirt since a stellar spell in the previous campaign.

The England international was a force of nature down the left flank, driving forward with pace and purpose and causing the Barcelona defence no end of problems.

But Rose was just one of many star performers in a famous result for Tottenham.
