Three years after deal failed, should Leeds United renew Frederik Sorensen interest?

The defender is starring for Koln in the Bundesliga – Leeds United will be kicking themself after their move fell through.

There was only one man to blame for Frederik Sorensen’s collapsed move to Leeds United in 2014. The Danish defender’s agent, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, after he prompted the club to abandon the move.

The publication reports that the then-Juventus defender was on the verge of swapping Turin for Elland Road on a season-long loan deal with an agreement to make the deal permanent for £3 million the following summer.

Sorensen even trained with the club on occasions as he waited for that pesky paperwork to be completed in time. However, the rapid collapse meant Leeds were instead forced to settle for the currently out-of-favour Liam Cooper and the card-happy Italian Giuseppe Bellusci, spending the season on loan at Serie A strugglers Empoli.

However, if Leeds make the long-awaited return to the Premier League at the end of the season, Sorensen could once again represent an ideal addition to the backline. With Pontus Jansson, Kyle Bartley and Luke Ayling laying the foundations for a play-off challenge, Leeds are hardly short of talented defenders but, beyond the initial XI, there’s a lack of depth.

Therefore, reinforcements will be required in the summer, especially as talented Championship players are no guarantee of success in the Premier League.

Consequently, Sorensen, who currently plies his trade for Bundesliga’s high-flyers Koln, would add both depth and quality due to his ability to flit between right-back and central defensive roles.

Averaging 3.2 tackles and 2.3 interceptions this season, Sorensen has been one of the most solid defenders in the German top flight and the fact he is standing out in a well-drilled, hard-working side who employ very similar tactics to Garry Monk’s Leeds means the transitional period could be comfortably overcome.

The Dane appeared very keen on moving to Leeds three years ago when they were mired in the Championship mid-table so the prospect of joining a club on the rise may well appeal.
