Ivan Toney was let go at last by Premier League side Newcastle United but he’s having an impact in League One with Peterborough United.

Newcastle United sold Aleksandr Mitrovic to Fulham and loaned Dwight Gayle to West Brom this summer. So imagine the frustration of supporters as both strikes scored on Saturday while Rafa Benitez’s goal-shy side stuttered to a 0-0 draw away at Crystal Palace.
But Mitrovic and Gayle are not the only former Newcastle strikers who got on the score-sheet this weekend. After three years and just two league appearances for the Tyneside giants, Ivan Toney was allowed to leave for Peterborough United this summer.
And the former Northampton Town youngster is starting to show his class at London Road. He has now scored twice in his last three games, including a stunning curling effort in Saturday’s 4-2 win away at Gillingham which was oddly reminiscent of Thierry Henry in his heyday.

Now, two goals in League One is not enough just yet to suggest that Newcastle made a mistake in discarding Toney, as they clearly did with Mitrovic.
But if he has the talent to produce a goal of such wonderful technical quality, perhaps Rafa Benitez should have given him a chance to prove himself rather than loan the youngster to Scunthorpe, Shrewsbury, Wigan and Scunthorpe again over the last two seasons.
