Lee Camp and Jason Steele are figthing for a place in Chris Coleman’s Sunderland XI ahead of the Championship clash with Leeds United at Elland Road.
Sunderland’s hopes of avoiding a second successive relegation have hardly been helped by the dire goalkeeping situation at the Stadium of Light.
Three new shot-stoppers have moved to Wearside since last summer – but it speaks volumes that none of them have impressed in any capacity across a nightmare campaign that looks set to end in Sunderland’s relegation to League One.
Robbin Ruiter, Jason Steele and latterly Lee Camp (below) have had their chance and wasted it. As a result, Sunderland are second from bottom in the Championship table and have conceded more goals, 72, than any other team in England’s second tier.
So it should come as little surprise that these disillusioned and glum-faced supporters have not exactly responded positively to a video posted on the club’s official Twitter account showing Steele and Camp in training ahead of Saturday’s trip to Leeds United.
Steele has not been seen since he was sent off for ludicrously misjudging and then handling the ball outside his area in March’s 1-0 defeat to QPR so expect Camp to be between the sticks at Elland Road.
The 33-year-old, however, has conceded 16 goals in his eight starts for the club so far so you can see why the fans are not exactly optimistic right now.
