Do the stats show Garry Monk is right about Leeds United attackers?

Only Chris Wood has reached double figures for Leeds this season.

On the face of it, Garry Monk doesn’t have too much to complain about at Elland Road right now. As it stands, he’s safe from the swinging axe of Massimo Cellino, which is more than most can say when sitting on the scalding managerial hot seat.

Furthermore, eight wins from ten games keeps Leeds on track for an unlikely foray into the end of season play-offs while, as an added bonus, he can revel in the fact that no permanent manager in Leeds’ illustrious history can better his 57% win ratio. Not even the Don himself, a certain Mr Revie.

But that’s the problem with perfectionists. Nothing is ever quite right. Leeds may have scored four away from home against Preston on Boxing Day but Monk was still far from satisfied.

“We work on all the attacking players getting into good positions to score goals,” Monk told the Yorkshire Evening Post after their festive bonanza at Deepdale.

“They’re all capable of it and I’m sure some of the players, they’ll say it themselves, should have had more goals this season.”

Chris Wood may have served a sweet slice of humble pie to his shoe-shuffling doubters by scoring 11 in just 22 league fixtures this season, but Leeds’ next highest scorer is the resurgent Souleymane Doukara on four. And he didn’t even start a game until November.

Furthermore, summer signings Kemar Roofe and Marcus Antonssen have netted just three times between them in 1780 minutes of Championship football.

Therefore, while the league’s top two goalscorers, Dwight Gayle, Glenn Murray and Scott Hogan, boast a healthy conversion rate of 26%, 25% and 19% respectively, the strikers at Leeds’ disposal can best be described as wasteful.

Wood’s 19% conversion rate is almost double his tally from the season before, but Roofe’s 4.5% total (below) and Antonssen’s 6.6% must be improved if they are to heave the pressure off the New Zealand international in the business end of the campaign.

If recent seasons are anything to go by, support strikers, midfielders and wingers need to chip in if a team is to realise their promotion ambitions and, as it stands, the prolific Wood needs help from his profligate team-mates.
