After eight years, Dean Marney is leaving Premier League high-flyers Burnley with a move to Championship Nottingham Forest on the cards.

After eight years of service, two promotions, one Championship title and 221 appearances, Dean Marney is bidding farewell to Burnley Football Club.

The 34-year-old, who is the longest serving player in The Clarets squad behind Kevin Long, is out of contract at the end of the season and will join fellow fans’ favourite Scott Arfield in departing Turf Moor.

And while Arfield has seemingly secured a move to his boyhood club Rangers, it seems that Marney has a destination lined up too.

The BBC reports that Nottingham Forest are keen on signing the former Tottenham Hotspur man on a free, a day after manager Aitor Karanka confirmed to the Nottingham Post that he was keen to bring Marney to the City Ground.

No deal has been agreed yet but, rather tellingly, Marney was spotted speaking to Karanka in a restaurant earlier in the week.

At this stage, it would be a big shock if the veteran midfielder was not wearing the red of Nottingham Forest next season.

And his departure will leave a big hole at Burnley, even if he has not made a single first-team appearance all season thanks to the aftermath of a cruciate ligament injury suffered back in 2017.

The word legend is thrown around too often but it would be hard to argue against Marney earning that status at Turf Moor.
