Southampton were willing to pay a huge fee to sign Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes but Premier League rivals Everton may be keen too.

Barely a transfer window has gone by without Quincy Promes being tipped with a move to the Premier League in recent years.

The Dutch winger was a constant in the gossip columns, with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur frequently linked, but it was Southampton who emerged as Promes’ top suitor in January.

Sky Sports claimed that a Saints side who have suffered from a lack of pace and ruthless efficiency in the final third were willing to pay a club record £30 million for a player who has scored 53 league goals in the last three-and-a-half seasons.

Russian giants Spartak, however, refused to let Promes leave for St Mary’s as they could not find a replacement. According to the club’s January signing Sofiane Hanni though, Southampton were not the only Premier League side keen on the former FC Twente flyer.

“A few weeks ago, Spartak refused a £30 million offer from Southampton for Quincy Promes, one of the best players in our team,” Hanni, who joined the Red and Whites from Anderlecht last month, told Sport Foot.

“I also heard Everton were interested.”

Now this is intriguing.

Everton appointed scout Pavel Kucherov last year and, in quotes reported by Sport Express, he raved about Promes’ qualities earlier. It would be no surprise to learn that Kucherov had recommended the winger to the Merseyside giants.

Though whether Promes has missed his chance to move to Goodison Park remains to be seen.

A speedy, incisive goalscoring wideman, Promes shares many attributes with one Theo Walcott, who moved to Everton from Arsenal for £20 million last month.
