Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel could return to the Premier League with Swansea City but where does Alfie Mawson’s future lie?
Martin Skrtel spent eight years at Liverpool
The Premier League may have assumed it had seen the last of shaven-headed Slovakian Martin Skrtel.
Yet, after just one season in Turkey with Fenerbahce, impressing despite the Istanbul finishing in a hugely disappointing third placed, Fotomac claims that the former Liverpool defender could be on his way to Swansea City.
After being penalised for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations last year, Fenerbahce’s precarious financial situation means they may be forced to cash in on arguably their most consistent performer across the 2016/17 season.
They paid Liverpool £5 million for Skrtel last summer, however, meaning Swansea are unlikely to get the 32-year-old on the cheap.
Contingency Plan?
Yet, the 2012 League Cup winner is far from the only experienced centre-back linked with a move to South Wales in recent weeks. The Mirror claimed last week that Napoli defender Raul Albiol was an ambitious £6 million target for Paul Clement’s side.
Raul Albiol
The 31-year-old was part of Spain’s golden generation, winning two European championship crowns either side of the 2010 World Cup. And signing the former Real Madrid and Valencia defender still has plenty left in his locker after helping Napoli accrue the highest points tally in their history last season.
And though Swansea supporters may be excited at these latest links, you wonder whether there is cause for concern. The Sun claimed that Alfie Mawson has already been talking to Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino about a potential move to White Hart Lane.
Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson
Valued at £15 million, three times more than Swansea paid Barnsley for his services last summer, the England Under-21 international is viewed as an excellent long-term prospect and his ability on the ball has caught Pochettino’s eye.
However, if Mawson does leave in the summer, at least Swansea appear to have put a contingency plan in place.
