If Paul Clement loses his job at Swansea City, Tony Pulis could be set for an immediate return to management.
When Swansea City first arrived in the Premier League back in 2011, Brendan Rodgers’ free-flowing side played some of the most eye-catching football in the division. ‘Swansealona’, they called it, with Leon Britton the Xavi of South Wales and Joe Allen gliding across the park with real Catalan panache.
The style that so enamoured the neutrals has been diluted somewhat since the current American ownership took over at the Liberty Stadium with a run of ever-changing managers bringing in new philosophies and taking away the club’s identity.
Now, they could employ Tony Pulis. The Telegraph report that the former West Brom boss, who was sacked by The Baggies on Monday after a run of two wins in 23 games, is a genuine candidate to replace Paul Clement should the under-fire coach lose his job at South Wales after just two wins in 2017/18.
Suddenly, the Swansea side who passed and pressed their way to success under Rodgers, Roberto Martinez and Michael Laudrup could be hoofing the ball up to a targetman while fielding three defensive midfielders at once.
West Brom fans were sick of Pulis’ pragmatism and Swansea supporters are used to far better. It’s little surprise, then, that even the threat of the drop does not make a manager who famously has never been relegated any more tempting.
