Norwich City are now leading the chase to sign Kenny McLean from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen so have Rangers dropped the ball?
With Kenny McLean’s contract at Aberdeen due to expire at the end of this season, it appeared for quite some time that Ibrox was his most likely destination.
According to the Daily Record, Rangers had a £300,000 bid rejected by the Dons during the summer. But, when it looked like Aberdeen were set to lose manager Derek McInnes to the blue half of Glasgow, the smart money was on McLean following in his manager’s footsteps.
In the end, of course, McInnes decided to stay at Pittodrie. And it seems that Rangers have now fallen behind in the pursuit of one of Scotland’s most in demand players, despite the Sunday Post stating in December that they were going to renew their interest in January.
Aberdeen may be forced to sell now or face up to the prospect of losing the 25-year-old on a free in six months, meaning there is a good chance Norwich could get their man for well below his actual market value.
But if £500,000 is all it takes to convince Aberdeen to sell, surely Rangers should not think twice about raising their initial offer by £200,000.
The Gers appear to have turned their attention to the likes of Greg Docherty of late, with the Daily Record stating that Hamilton are demanding they double their opening offer of £300,000.
But McLean could be available for cheaper and, having been one of the league’s best midfielders for the last two years, is proven over a longer period of time.
So Rangers will be kicking themselves if McLean slips through their net, especially for just half a million pounds.
