Luke Molyneux featured twice for Jack Ross’s League One flyers Sunderland at the start of the season and is now on loan at Gateshead.

It has been a difficult couple of years for Sunderland but the clubs array of talented, homegrown youngsters has given these put-upon supporters something to feel positive about.

As it stands, George Honeyman is Sunderland’s captain and Josh Maja is their top scorer, while Denver Hume, Bali Mumba, Lynden Gooch and Benjamin Kimpioka mean the future looks bright on Wearside.

But do not forget about Luke Molyneux. The 20-year-old has caught the eye of manager Jack Ross, coming off the bench against Charlton Athletic and Luton Town in the opening weeks of the League One season.

And he is now continuing his progression on loan at local outfit Gateshead. Molyneux has made four appearances in the National League so far and marked his own personal milestone this weekend, scoring his first senior goal in a 4-0 thrashing of Dunston UTS.

“Hopefully that helps prove that I’ve got enough to be starting week in, week out,” Molyneux told Gateshead’s official website.

“It was an amazing feeling, the game was pretty much over and done with, but it was great for me to get a goal for the club.”

Ross has shown during his time in charge of both Sunderland and St Mirren that he is willing to give youth a chance, having developed the likes of Stephen Mallan and Lewis Morgan north of the border in Paisley.

If Molyneux continues to impress at Gateshead, expect him to make his first ever Sunderland start before too long.
