Championship hopefuls West Bromwich Albion were close to signing left-back Oviedo from League One Sunderland on transfer deadline day.

Sunderland defender Bryan Oviedo has told CRHoy that his deadline day move to West Bromwich Albion fell through because the required documents were not submitted in time.

The Costa Rica international is one of the highest earning players in Sunderland’s squad and it appeared that the Black Cats were willing to cash in last month with Oviedo falling down the pecking order recently under Jack Ross.

The former Everton left-back was on the verge of returning to the Championship with West Brom, where he would have provided competition for Kieran Gibbs in Darren Moore’s starting XI.

And, speaking to CRHoy, Oviedo has confirmed that he passed a medical and put pen to paper before being forced to return to Wearside after the move collapsed.

“In the end a document did not arrive on time, I passed the medical tests and everything was fine. I do not know what happened. One of the two clubs did not send the document,” said the 28-year-old.

“I was notified at 6pm, I travelled about 3 hours from my house, I did the medical tests and I signed, but in the end it was 11:05 and I saw that something was strange.

“I asked my representative and he told me that they supposedly did not send the documents before 11:00 pm. If there is a bit of disappointment because it was already confirmed.”

In fairness to Oviedo, he adds that he is still happy with life on Wearside and Sunderland fans can guarantee that he will get his head down and continue to work hard for the cause as Ross’ side eye a place in the top two of the third tier.

Unlike Didier Ndong, Papy Djilobodji and co, Oviedo’s commitment has been unquestionable throughout the club’s decline.
