Sunderland are reportedly fans of Max Johnstone, who is expected to leave Premier League giants Manchester United this summer.

It seems unlikely that there will be any comings and goings from Sunderland until prospective new owner Stuart Donald has his takeover ratified by the EFL, as reported by the Sun.

But when that is all done and dusted, the Black Cats could be free to swoop for 19-year-old goalkeeper Max Johnstone.

ESPN reported a fortnight ago that Sunderland were keen to sign Johnstone from Manchester United this summer, with Cardiff City and Bury also interested.

And the Manchester Evening News are reporting that the teenage shot-stopper could soon be within Sunderland’s grasp. Because it is understood that Johnstone is one of five goalkeepers that United are set to bid farewell to this summer.

The former Fleetwood Town prospect is expected to be released when his contract expires having not made a single appearance for either the U18 or U23 sides this season.

The report adds that Max’s older brother Sam, who has spent the last season-and-a-half on loan at Aston Villa, is also set to depart.

Theo Richardson, Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui and Dean Henderson will also leave. Henderson has shone at Shrewsbury Town this summer, earning a place in the League One Team of the Season, and should not be short of suitors.

But it remains to be seen whether Johnstone the younger will end up at Sunderland. The Black Cats certainly need a new goalkeeper and, considering their alleged debt, the fact he is available on a free will surely appeal.
