Southampton reportedly want £7m for Sam Gallagher after a strong loan season at Blackburn Rovers but could Sunderland pay such a fee?
While few could doubt Fabio Borini’s work rate, his goal tally certainly leaves a lot to be desired. With just two goals in 23 Premier League appearances in 2016/17, the Italian certainly swings more on the side of perspiration than inspiration.
Therefore, you cannot imagine that too many supporters will be hosting candlelit vigils if Celtic pay £6 million to lure him from the Stadium of Light this summer, as reported by Calciomercato.
Manager Brendan Rodgers worked with Borini at Liverpool, Swansea and during his spell at the head of Chelsea’s youth academy and knows the versatile forward better than most. Therefore, a summer move could be the best option for all parties.
And Sunderland could put that influx of cash to good use. As David Moyes has made painfully clear throughout the season, the North East strugglers hardly have money to burn after all as their debt crisis limited them largely to free transfers and short-term loans.
And, with The Sun claiming that Southampton will demand up to £7 million for Sam Gallagher this summer, the money earned from Borini’s sale could come in very handy.
One in, one out?
Unlike the one-time Roma forward, Gallagher has enjoyed a strong season in front of goal on loan at Blackburn Rovers. In fact, despite the Lancashire giants’ relegation, the 21-year-old still mustered eleven Championship goals while impressing with his work-rate, hold-up play and aerial prowess.
However, £7 million represents a rather daunting fee for a club in Sunderland’s dire financial situation.
Therefore, if Moyes was considering selling Borini before then he should certainly be advertising his availability now as he attempts to rake in the funds required to bring a new centre-forward to the Stadium of Light.
