Max Johnstone moved to Sunderland this summer after failing to make the grade at Manchester United.

Sunderland have always been happy to offer a good home to players let go by Manchester United.
Goalkeeper Max Johnstone followed in the footsteps of Kieran Richardson, John O’Shea, Paddy McNair and co by swapping Old Trafford for the Stadium of Light this summer.
According to the Chronicle in July, the 20-year-old signed a one-year deal with Sunderland after impressing goalkeeping coach Mark Prudhoe during a short-term trial on Wearside.
Johnstone, who is the younger brother of West Brom stopper Sam, has been a regular for Sunderland’s U23 side at the start of this season.
Despite being on the receiving end of a 7-0 thrashing away at Wolves on Monday evening, it seems Johnstone has caught the eye of the Black Cats’ coaches. Because Sunderland have used their official Twitter account to welcome him to first-team training on Tuesday.
It remains to be seen whether the Preston-born goalkeeper will be given a chance by manager Jack Ross in the coming months.
Scotland international Jon McLaughlin is Sunderland’s number one as it stands with Robbin Ruiter as back-up. Johnstone, then, could be battling the exciting Max Stryjek, who is on loan at Eastleigh until late October, to be third in the pecking order.
