Sunderland move is the opportunity Celtic’s Calvin Miller desperately needs

Scottish Premiership giants Celtic are reportedly set to loan Calvin Miller to League One outfit Sunderland.

You have to feel for Calvin Miller.

The 20-year-old is one of the most exciting youngsters in Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic squad but the opportunities just aren’t coming his way. Miller made just three Scottish Premiership appearances as Celtic lifted a seventh straight title in 2017/18 – but that is in no way a reflection of his abilities.

Unfortunately for Miller, he happens to want the same left-back role that the brilliant Kieran Tierney has made his own in recent seasons. There aren’t many better left-backs in British football than Tierney right now so there’s not a lot Miller can do to change his current predicament.

Apart from leave on loan, of course.

TEAMtalk are reporting that Sunderland are hoping to tie up a deal to sign the Glasgow-born youngster on a temporary deal with new Black Cats boss Jack Ross, who recently arrived from St Mirren, aiming to use his contacts north of the border.

Now, while Miller has barely been given a chance to show what he can do at Celtic, first-team opportunities will be far easier to come by at Sunderland. Particularly with Sunderland seemingly under pressure to sell current first-choice left-back Bryan Oviedo.

The Chronicle claims that the Costa Rican internationals wages are too much for a League One side.

Now, Jack Ross has a fine record with young players, moulding Lewis Morgan and Stephen Mallan into starts at St Mirren. Celtic counterpart Rodgers is right to trust him to have the same impact on Miller.
