Former Newcastle United defender David Edgar is understood to be on trial with League One title-chasers Sunderland.
A former Newcastle United man could be the latest addition to Sunderland’s League One title-chasing squad.
HITC sources told us on Tuesday that the Black Cats had invited David Edgar for a trial at the Stadium of Light. The 31-year-old, who recently departed MLS second tier outfit Ottawa Fury, is currently club-less and looking for a fresh start.
HITC were lead to believe that Edgar, who made his senior debut for Newcastle and represented the Magpies between 2001 and 2009, was open to a return to the UK.
And, in quotes reported by the Sunderland Echo, manager Jack Ross has refused to confirm that the defender is under consideration. But, tellingly, he admitted that he is looking to reinforce his backline.
“I haven’t had any confirmation of that at the moment, if we do I’ll let you know,” said the former St Mirren boss. “We wanted to have a look because we don’t have a naturally left-sided centre-back,” he said.
“We don’t really have a full-back/centre-back in the squad either.”
Canada international Edgar looks like exactly the sort of player Ross wants with the Ontario-born ace capable of playing both at centre-half and left-back if required. The manager’s comments appear to be a clear hint that he is indeed interested in conducting a deal for the free-agent.
Edgar also represented Burnley, Huddersfield, Birmingham, Sheffield United and Swansea during his time in English football, and would bring a wealth of experience to a Sunderland side sitting four points off the top of the table with a game in hand.
