Jason Cummings looks set to swap Hibernian for Nottingham Forest despite being heavily linked with Sunderland in recent months.

It’s been three weeks since David Moyes put Sunderland out of their misery by handing in his much-anticipated resignation.

Though the Scot was expected to remain at the helm and attempt to guide Sunderland back to the Premier League with the backing of chief executive Martin Bain, his position had become untenable at the Stadium of Light.

The disenchanted supporters, with chants of ‘Moyes out’ increasing in regularity and volume in the final weeks of the season, made sure of that.

And, despite the Scottish Sun claiming that the club will make a formal approach for Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes later this week, the club could pay for not acting sooner.

After all, there are few teams in the second tier more in need of restructuring with a number of key players out of contract, such as Jermain Defoe, John O’Shea, Victor Anichebe and Seb Larsson, and others expected to be sold.

Body blow

However, according to The Chronicle, Sunderland’s drawn-out search for Moyes’ replacement looks likely to have cost them one of their top summer targets. Because The Scotsman claim that Nottingham Forest are now closing in on Hibernian hitman Jason Cummings in a £1 million deal.

The 21-year-old may have been the ideal addition at the Stadium of Light this summer. Cummings is a natural born goalscorer, becoming the first Hibs player in over 50 years to score more than 20 in three straight seasons.

Furthermore, the youngster’s affordable price tag meant he was within budget for a Sunderland side ravaged by huge debts. The Chronicle claims that Moyes had scouted Cummings personally last season and, if he was still at the helm, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he would be heading to the North East rather than Nottingham.

As it stands, however, Sunderland look set to lose out to one of their league rivals.
