Sunderland goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter left fans divided with a mixed performance at Hull City’s KCom Stadium.
Unfairly or not, plenty of fingers were pointed at Robbin Ruiter as Sunderland were pegged back by Hull City in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the KCom Stadium.
Former Black Cats midfielder David Meyler salvaged a point for the hosts with just eight minutes on the clock but it was not just the timing of the goal which left supporters making the trip back to Wearside with a bad taste in their mouths.
Although Meyler’s strike took a nick of the lunging Lamine Kone, question marks once again were raised about the quality of Sunderland’s goalkeepers.
Ruiter, who was beaten at his near post in last week’s home defeat to Sheffield United, was left floundering again as a tame effort squirmed beyond his grasp.
The Dutchman, who joined on a free transfer from FC Twente this summer, produced a couple of fine first-half saves to ensure James Vaughan’s goal had Sunderland in an excellent position to pick up three much needed points.
However, in the eyes of many supporters, the 30-year-old glovesman did little to boost his hopes of a regular place between the sticks with another summer signing, Jason Steele, waiting in the wings.
The question, however, is whether Ruiter can fairly be blamed for being undone by a deflection.
