Sunderland legend Niall Quinn has been linked with a move to rescue his struggling former club.

With all the problems besetting Sunderland on and off the pitch; the spiralling debt, the uninterested owner and the prospect of third tier football for the first time in half a century, reports that Niall Quinn could return on a white horse and save his former club was exactly the boost the fans needed.
The last time Quinn took over Sunderland, in 2006, they were promoted to the Premier League a year later under Roy Keane, and while repeating that trick is all but impossible in the near future, the 51-year-old’s return would be a feel-good story that the club, the city and the fans desperately need.

The sooner American owner Short sells up the better but that is easier said than done due to the club’s considerable debt and their position at the bottom of the Championship table.
Maybe things will have to get worse before they get better, but reports that Quinn could make an emotional return to Wearside, given weight by the BBC, at least give these put-upon supporters something to smile about.
