Marcus Maddison continues to be linked with Sunderland while shining in League One for Peterborough United.

The Marcus Maddison to Sunderland saga isn’t over yet.
Speaking to Roker Report, the Black Cats’ head of football operations, Richard Hill, has dropped a major hint that Sunderland will look to bring the Peterborough United to Wearside on a free when his contract expires next summer.
A Durham-born winger who spent time at Newcastle United and Gateshead before making his name at London Road, it is no secret that Maddison is a boyhood Sunderland fanatic. And, thanks to Peterborough’s rather outspoken chairman, it’s also no secret that Jack Ross’s side have been mulling over bringing the 25-year-old back to the North East.
Posh owner Darragh McAnthony claimed on Twitter this week that Sunderland turned down the chance to sign Maddison during the summer transfer window. Now, Hill has shed light on the situation while suggesting that arguably League One’s most influential attacker could finally get his dream move this time next year.
“Marcus Maddison was mentioned and I was asked if there was any interest, and was informed that there was a buy out clause in his contract of £2.5m – I said that at that money he (would cost) was not for me,” Hill told Roker Report.
“What I will say, though, is at the end of this season when Marcus Maddison’s contract has expired, then that’s a totally different conundrum in my opinion.”

You don’t even have to read between the lines to understand that Sunderland are planning to step up their interest in Peterborough’s talisman by the time the clocks go back in 2020.
A set-piece master with a wand of a left foot, Maddison has already produced five assists in five games for Posh this season and he has exactly the kind of match-winning ability that draw-specialists Sunderland need.
