Huddersfield Town loanee Aaron Mooy is on Middlesbrough’s radar, but Sunderland must do everything in their power to bring him to the Stadium of Light.

If Middlesbrough, rather than Huddersfield Town, had signed Aaron Mooy on loan last summer, perhaps the North East side would have made a decent fist of their first season back in the Premier League after seven years away.

Perhaps they would not be about to depart with a whimper, destined to be forgotten as soon as May makes way for June.

Yet according to The Sunday People, Middlesbrough could at least make an attempt to sign Mooy at the end of this season. Better late than never after all.

The dynamic Australian midfielder has been nothing short of a revelation since arriving at Huddersfield on loan from Manchester City, his driving runs and ability to thread the ball through the eye of the needle a major factor in their unexpected promotion challenge.

Mooy is exactly the sort of player turgid, bore-draw specialists Boro have been crying out for. He would add an element of creativity to a defensively minded trio while the promise of goals from midfield would not go amiss.

And if they wanted an extra reason to make him their top summer target, North East rivals Sunderland are also interested, as reported by The Sun.

Although David Moyes’ side simply cannot afford to allow Boro to steal a march. Despite Mooy’s outstanding performances in the Championship, and public praise from Pep Guardiola, it appears unlikely that he would play a major role for City next season.

Therefore Sunderland should attempt to profit, with Mooy purporting to add some much needed guile to a midfield lacking any sort of vision or creative prowess.

Furthermore, with the club preparing for life in the second tier, the Australian is a proven Championship talent and exactly the sort of signing Sunderland needs if they are to harbour any realistic hopes of following in Newcastle United’s, rather than Aston Villa’s footsteps.

The likelihood is that Sunderland will do battle with Boro in the Championship next season. And Mooy’s destination could prove to be the deciding factor.
