Could Sunderland sign the best midfielder in League One without spending a single penny? Quite possibly, so long as they beat off competition from numerous Football League rivals with Hibernian ace Dylan McGeouch in high demand.

According to the Scottish Sun, Hibs seem resigned to losing McGeouch this summer with his contract due to expire. Rangers, Aberdeen, QPR and Blackburn Rovers are among those keen so far, while Sunderand manager Jack Ross is keen to bring the 25-year-old to Wearside with him from Scotland.

The former St Mirren boss will know just how talented McGeouch is. The gifted playmaker, who represented both Celtic and Rangers in his youth career, put his fitness problems behind him to become one of the most influential players in Scottish football last season.

Alongside John McGinn, who Ross also wants at the Stadium of Light, McGeouch helped newly promoted Hibs finish fourth – and was rewarded with a well-deserved Scotland debut in last week’s 2-0 defeat to Peru.

There are no shortage of talented central midfielders in League One, from Shrewsbury Town’s goalscoring dynamo Jon Nolan to Plymouth Argyle’s inspiration Graham Carey, but McGeouch has the skill, vision and creativity to top the lot.

So if Sunderland want to make their stay in the third tier a short one, this is the sort of signing that would go a long way to helping them back to the (relative) big time.
