Jack Ross’ Sunderland are third in the League One table and owner Stewart Donald expects new signings to arrive at the Stadium of Light

Sunderland are going strong right now in the third tier of English football.
After successive relegations, Jack Ross’ Black Cats have promotion in their sights and are currently third in the League One table, just three points behind leaders Portsmouth with a game in hand to boot.
And Sunderland fans can expect a couple of new faces in the January transfer window as the fallen giants aim to make their stay in League One as short as possible. Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, owner Stewart Donald has revealed where the club are likely to spend in the New Year.
“Jack would like a couple potentially,” said Donald, who has brought pride and funds back to Sunderland after taking over from Ellis Short.
“We may look at a striker depending on – making sure Charlie [Wyke] comes back. I think we are comfortable in midfield, we think we have got enough wingers.

“Possibly a centre-back addition, top-end and back-end of the pitch just to make sure we have got enough numbers and enough quality.”
Sunderland have scored an impressive 30 goals in 15 games this season but Josh Maja (below), with nine, is the only player to have netted more than five times. Wyke’s return from injury around Christmas time should ease the burden on the teenager.
At the other end, Sunderland have looked pretty solid. They have the second best defensive record behind Blackpool, conceding just 13 goals so far.
