Steven Zuber was heavily linked with a move to Leeds United before joining Stuttgart on loan for the rest of the 2018/19 season.
BILD broke the news at the start of January that Leeds were keen on snapping up the Switzerland international, a busy and creative midfielder who could have replaced the departed Samu Saiz at Elland Road.
The Mirror claimed that a permanent deal would have set The Whites’ back a hefty £10.8 million. In the end, however, they had no reason to worry about an eye-watering price-tag as Zuber moved from Hoffenheim to Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart instead.
Though, come the end of the season, it would be no surprise if the 27-year-old was left wondering if he’d made the right decision.
Despite losing five of their last seven games, Leeds are still second in the Championship table and are dreaming of bringing an end to their 15-year exile from the Premier League this season. If Leeds do finish in the top two, each and every one of their promotion-winning players will be afforded hero status in West Yorkshire.
The best thing Stuttgart can hope for, however, is avoiding a relegation that is looking more and more likely.
The 2007 Bundesliga champions are in free-fall under the ailing Marcus Weinzierl, losing eight of their 12 league games under the former Schalke and Augsburg coach. Stuttgart are now 16th, just two places off the bottom.
