Morgan Gibbs-White shone off the bench as Wolverhampton Wanderers narrowly lost at home to Premier League opponents Spurs at Molineux.
Two of England’s brightest midfield talents went head to head at Molineux a week ago.
But despite Wolves losing 3-2 at home to Tottenham Hotspur, it was Morgan Gibbs-White, rather than Harry Winks, who came out of the clash with his reputation enhanced.
Gibbs-White came off the bench with half an hour remaining and immediately changed the game, controlling the midfield and opening up Mauricio Pochettino’s defence time and time again with one beautifully weighted through ball to Helder Costa drawing gasps from an awe-struck home crowd.
So Winks, who recently started England’s famous 3-2 Nations League win away at Spain, was comfortably overshadowed. That is the opinion of legendary Wolves striker Steve Bull anyway.
“All of us knew that the Stafford-born midfielder had ability, but displaying such attacking intent against Mauricio Pochettino’s men – leaving England international Harry Winks in the dust on a few occasions – was a huge statement,” Bull told the Express and Star.
“I would be surprised to see him come into the starting XI at Arsenal (at the weekend) but, either way, Gibbs-White will be an important part of the squad moving forward.”
18-year-old Gibbs-White has played just 59 minutes of Premier League football all season and faces a major challenge forcing his way into the starting XI given how impressive the Portugal internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho have been at the heart of midfield.
But Gibbs-White has proven to manager Nuno Espirito Santo that he can be relied on to make an impact against top opposition.
