Steve Bruce has told the Birmingham Mail that the raucous atmosphere created by the Aston Villa fans during their 3-1 win against Cardiff City proved Danny Murphy wrong once and for all.

The Match of the Day pundit was heavily criticised by supporters for questioning their commitment to the club earlier in the week, going on to describe Villa Park as ‘dull’ and lacking the ‘wow factor’ of an Elland Road, for instance, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

However Bruce, who admitted that the prospect of being cheered on in front of a vociferous Villa Park crowd was a major factor in him deciding to take the job, says the supporters made the pundit look rather foolish on Saturday.

“Well if that’s a bit boring and a bit dull then I’ve been to some really dull and boring places I have to tell you!” Bruce told the Birmingham Mail.

“Look, Aston Villa for me always has been, if I was the manager or not, a terrific old stadium.

“If you go around to some of the stadiums you go to…. some of the new ones, of course, are a bit samey.

“This has got a bit of history and tradition and Villa Park for me has always been one of the great places to play.”

The atmosphere inside the famous old ground may not quite have reflected Bruce’s point during the latter stages of last season, with the fans understandably furious at the spineless performances of their team as they stumbled into the Championship.

However, with Villa continuing to salvage their season under the former Hull City boss, with Saturday’s triumph over Cardiff their fourth win in seven games since he took the reins, the belief and positivity appears to be flooding back to the second city.
