Phillip Cocu’s Derby County reportedly want to sign Andre Ayew from Championship rivals Swansea City.

It is fair to say Andre Ayew’s second spell at Swansea City hasn’t been quite as impressive as the first.

Back in the summer of 2015, the Liberty Stadium faithful probably couldn’t believe their luck when one of the most effervescent and effective forwards in French football swapped the giants of Marseille for South Wales. And with 12 goals in his debut season for The Swans, Ayew didn’t disappoint.

Yet the same cannot be said after his shock return to the Liberty in January 2018 after a brief spell at West Ham United – for a club record £18.5 million no less (BBC).

Swansea player Andre Ayew reacts after a chance goes begging during the Premier League match between Swansea City and Chelsea at Liberty Stadium on April 28, 2018 in Swansea, Wales.

In 12 games, Ayew failed to find the net as Swansea were slumped out of the Premier League with barely a whimper.

And, after spending last season on loan at Fenerbahce, the Ghana international is now little more than an expensive white elephant, resembling overpriced sofa that you bought on a whim before checking if it even fits into your modest front room.

Fortunately, Football Ghana claims that Derby County could offer Swansea a way out. Manager Phillip Cocu is keen to reunite with a player he worked under at Fenerbahce for a brief spell last season.

This is the chance Swansea have been dreaming of with just days remaining in the transfer window. However, with Wayne Rooney making that barely-believable switch to Pride Park on Tuesday, do Derby now have one ageing centre-forward too many?
