As a ferocious Aston Villa supporter, the sight of Wolverhampton Wanderers beating and outplaying the giants of Chelsea on Wednesday night might have been hard to stomach for Stan Collymore.

After a run of five defeats in six Premier League games, Wolves roared back to form in style in midweek. Goals from Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota in the second half sealed a dramatic comeback win against Maurizio Sarri’s side at Molineux.

And, reacting on Twitter, Collymore has paid tribute to Wolves’ quality in attack as they caused Chelsea no end of problems in front of their own supporters.

But the former Villa striker has also tempered his praise with one rather sobering thought – is this a Wolves side who only perform to their peak against elite opposition?

You can see where Collymore is coming from. Wolves have beaten Chelsea and picked up impressive draws against Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal this season while losing against the likes of Cardiff, Huddersfield, Brighton and Watford.

But it must be pointed out that Wolves did cruise to the Championship title with 99 points last season. And if away trips to Millwall, Barnsley and co don’t count as ‘muck and nettle’ fixtures then what does?
