Stan Collymore believes the form and the belief of Liverpool’s players gives them a substantial advantage over Tottenham Hotspur ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final at the Wanda Metropolitano, speaking to the Mirror (28 May, page 51).

Spurs stunned Ajax to seal their place in the tournament final for the first time, coming from two goals down inside just 45 minutes in Amsterdam thanks to a remarkable Lucas Moura hat-trick.

But Liverpool arguably went one better against the giants of Barcelona, overcoming a 3-0 first-leg defeat to seal one of the most famous results in the club’s history at Anfield.

Divock Origi and Gini Wijanldum scored twice apiece on Merseyside to leave Barca aghast and fire Liverpool into the Champions League decider for the second time in 12 months.

And Collymore, who played for The Reds between 1995 and 1997, believes that remarkable triumph over the La Liga champions will give Jurgen Klopp’s side the confidence and the fire that they need to seal a sixth European crown.

“The fact that Liverpool have more weapons than Tottenham makes my old club favourites to win the Champions League final in Madrid on Saturday,” Collymore said.

Stan Collymore scoring his second goal of the match (Liverpool's third) during Liverpool's 4-0 Premier League victory against Leeds at Anfield, 19th February 1997.

“The front three of Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, plus the form of Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum, will give them the edge, however slight.

“The fact Liverpool beat Barcelona in such extraordinary circumstances as well will mean the feeling in the dressing room is quite simple. They will believe they shattered a stronger glass ceiling that night than anything they’d have to break to beat Spurs and that will give them huge belief.”

Liverpool are arguably the favourites after beating Tottenham home and away in the Premier League in 2018/19 though Mauricio Pochettino’s side have made a history of confounding the expectations.
