Scottish Premiership champions Celtic travel to St Johnstone’s McDiarmid Park for Wednesday’s League Cup clash.

Celtic will be desperate to get their season back on track against St Johnstone in tonight’s Scottish League Cup clash at McDiarmid Park.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have endured their worst domestic start for 20 years and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock on Sunday. Fortunately for the Hoops, however, they do have a striker in razor-sharp form.

Leigh Griffiths scored the winner after coming off the bench in last week’s Europa League clash against Rosenborg and marked a rare start with another trademark poacher’s finish at Rugby Park.

After watching wonderful free-kicks from Niall McGinn and James Tavernier fly past him in recent games against Aberdeen and Rangers, St Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark is understandably wary about coming up against another set-piece specialist in Celtic’s number nine.

“The two free-kicks we’ve conceded in the last two games have been great free-kicks,” Clark, who conceded five at Ibrox on Sunday, told the Courier. “We need to cut that out and stay on our feet.

“Celtic have their own dead ball specialist in Leigh Griffiths. Everybody remembers the two he got for Scotland against England (in a World Cup qualifier in June 2017). He can go either side.”

It remains to be seen whether Griffiths will retain his place in the starting XI away at St Johnstone. Rodgers may opt to give an opportunity to £9 million record signing Odsonne Edouard, who is without a goal in his last six games.
