Real Madrid are on the hunt for a new central defensive partner for captain Sergio Ramos and according to Spanish publication Don Balon, Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld is the top choice.

Los Blancos president Florentino Perez is big fan of Alderweireld and the Belgian’s impressive performances for Spurs since joining the club in 2015.

Perez wants to bring the 28-year-old to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu despite his connections with city rivals Atletico Madrid – whom Tottenham signed him from a little over two years ago.

Inter Milan are also believed to be interested in Alderweireld, whose future in North London has been cast into doubt because of difficulties negotiating a new contract.

The Telegraph reported in September that the defender wanted to increase his current £50,000-a-week deal to be on a par with the highest earners at the club.

Alderweireld’s agent, Stijn Francis, said at the time: “If you only look at his figures, Toby is impressive and for his performances, he deserves either a correct contract from Tottenham or a transfer.

“For a transfer, you know that he can only leave Tottenham for seven or eight teams and almost all the other top clubs are interested in Toby.”

Since then there have been no updates in negotiations and when most recently asked, on October 17, whether there had been any progress the Belgium international’s answer, as quoted by the Sun, was a simple: “No”.
