Scottish Premiership champions Celtic were linked with Birmingham City star Che Adams before he moved to the Premier League with the Saints.
Celtic fans were never particularly confident that they’d see Che Adams wearing the famous green and white hoops. And with good reason.
The Mirror reported in February that Celtic had sent scouts to watch the Birmingham City talisman in action. And Hoops fans up and down the country would have had pretty much the same reaction.
In an ideal world, Adams would be on his way to Scotland looking to follow in the footsteps of Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton, a prolific centre-forward with pace, power and unlimited potential. He was the sort of marquee signing Celtic needed to make to put Scottish football back on the map.
But teams north of the border simply cannot compete with the money on offer in the English Premier League these days. Even Celtic are dwarfed, at least in financial terms, by Burnley, Watford and co.
Southampton too. Five months after those Celtic links emerged, Adams has swapped Birmingham for the Saints for a fee of £15 million, as reported by the BBC. For context, it is worth pointing out that Celtic’s record signing, Odsonne Edouard, cost £6 million less.
Back in February, The Mirror believed that a fee of around £9 million was being touted for Adams but every goal he scored, every game he won almost single-handedly, saw his price-tag soar into orbit and well out of Celtic’s reach.
Harsh reality has just struck again.
