Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic could leave the Scottish Premiership and make the trip to St Mary’s and join Southampton.

Tom Rogic would be following in esteemed footsteps if he leaves Celtic for Southampton this summer.

As reported by the Daily Record, Southampton’s head of recruitment Ross Wilson was at Parkhead on Sunday as Rogic produced another masterful performance in Celtic’s 5-0 thrashing of Old Firm rivals Rangers.

It is understood that The Saints are hoping to land the 25-year-old on a cut price deal with just one year remaining on his Celtic contract. The World Game claimed recently that Rogic was uncertain about signing a new deal.

And, if Southampton pull off an escape from relegation, Rogic could hardly be criticised by being tempted by a move to St Mary’s, even if he would be swapping domestic titles and Champions League football for a side in the bottom half of England’s top tier.

Because, since 2013, Southampton have signed a number of players from Celtic and they have all gone onto bigger, and arguably better, things.

Fraser Forster became an England international on the south coast, Victor Wanyama shone and earned a big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur while, after just two years, Virgil van Dijk swapped Southampton for Liverpool and became the most expensive defender in football history.

If Rogic considers the successes of Forster, Wanyama and Van Dijk, swapping Celtic for Southampton could just appeal.
