Liverpool have signed enough players from Southampton over the years so maybe it is time the South Coast club turned the tables.

According to the Telegraph, Danny Ings has rejected a long-term contract offer to stay at Anfield and has his heart set on finding a new club this summer.

The 25-year-old’s three years on Merseyside have been ravaged by two serious knee injuries. And, with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and even Dominic Solanke keeping him out of the side, Ings has come to the conclusion that he needs to leave to secure first-team football.

But the one-time England international will not be short of offers, particularly with the Telegraph adding that Liverpool are willing to let him go on the cheap as a show of goodwill.

The Mirror states that Southampton, along with Tottenham, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Inter Milan, have enquired about Ings’ availability in recent times and these latest reports should not pass Mark Hughes by.

A lack of firepower nearly cost Southampton their Premier League status last season. They finished 17th and scored just 37 goals in 38 games. The fact that Charlie Austin was their most prolific hit man with seven despite missing four months through injury says it all.

Ings, however, is a natural-born goal-scorer who comes alive in the penalty area, making him exactly the kind of player Southampton are crying out for.

Now is the time to make their move.
