Angus Gunn made his second appearance for Southampton as Mark Hughes’ side beat Everton in the Carabao Cup.

Mark Hughes now has a difficult decision to make. He has largely stuck by a core group of players during Southampton’s difficult start to the season, but he will not be overlooking a much-improved performance away at Everton in Tuesday’s EFL Cup clash.
The Saints made six changes at Goodison Park and switched to a three-at-the-back formation as they prevailed on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.
Southampton were the better side throughout and will have been frustrated not to win in normal time; Theo Walcott’s 85th-minute equaliser cancelling out Danny Ings’ strike on the stroke of half-time.
There was little doubt about the star of the show. Angus Gunn made only his second appearance for the South Coast club since his £13.5 million move from Manchester City and took his chance in style.

The 22-year-old made a couple of smart stops at Goodison and was the hero in the shootout, too, denying Walcott before Cedric Soares stepped up and put Southampton into the fourth round.
Unfortunately for Gunn, however, the form of Alex McCarthy means Premier League football is out of his reach for now but he is not a bad option to have in reserve.
