Mark Hughes will always be remembered as the man who strutted into Southampton in March, gave the Saints’ under-performing players an almighty kick up the backside and dragged the South Coat club over the line to Premier League survival.
But is Hughes the man to really take Southampton forward in the long term? Perhaps not.
The Welshman has won one of eight Premier League games in 2018/19 with The Saints looking a shadow of the side who thrilled neutrals and bloodied the big boys during the reigns of Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman.
So no wonder their increasingly unhappy fans have taken to Twitter now that Leonardo Jardim has suddenly become available.
Just 17 months after leading Monaco to a stunning Ligue 1 title triumph, not to mention the semi-finals of the Champions League, the highly-rated Venezuelan has left the principality club by mutual consent, according to The Guardian, with Thierry Henry the favourite to take over his former team.
Jardim has paid the price for a disastrous start to the season, with Monaco picking up six points from nine games, but the thrilling attacking football, not to mention the trophies he brought to the Stade Louis II, will not be forgotten any time soon.
Jardim is a manager with a proven track record, not only at Monaco but Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos too. So his availability is something Southampton should consider, right?
