Simon Grayson makes a bold claim about Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady

Aiden McGeady has scored 14 goals to fire Jack Ross’s Sunderland to the League One play-off final at Wembley.

Simon Grayson has described Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady as the most talented player he has ever coached and suggested to talkSPORT (20 May, 1:00pm) that a lack of consistency is the only thing that has stopped him from becoming an established Premier League star.

There have never been any doubts about the 33-year-old’s natural talent, the former Republic of Ireland international strutting his stuff during a nomadic club career at the likes of Celtic, Everton and Spartak Moscow.

But McGeady is enjoying arguably his best season since his Celtic heyday at Sunderland, helping Jack Ross’s side to the League One play-off final with 14 goals and six assists in all competitions.

Grayson is well placed to judge the veteran given that he worked with him during a short spell in charge of the Black Cats at the start of 2017/18. And, speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, he could hardly speak more highly of McGeady.

“He should never be playing in League One. He’s the most talented player I’ve ever worked with. He can do things other players can only dream of doing,” said the former Leeds United boss.

When asked why McGeady’s Premier League career had been limited to a disappointing stint at Everton, Grayson had one theory – consistency, or a lack thereof.

The three time Scottish Premiership champion has certainly flattered to deceive at times so he deserves added praise for an excellent campaign at Celtic in which he has performed almost on a weekly basis.
